We are an open group of Massage Therapists looking to create a community in the Hoboken/Jersey City area. We talk about continuing education, government relations concerns, business development, etc. We welcome you!

We will be in the back booths with an AMTA sign on the table.
ALL LMTs and Students are Welcome!

June 2019 Highlights

  • Future Week-day Jersey City meet ups are targeted to be in the downtown JC area around Grove Street, focusing on business development.

Topic: NJ Sales Tax: When and How much to collect and file.

  • NJ Sales Tax = 6.625% of sales, burden to client – not the practitioner, and is not included in calculation of income tax
  • Due the 20th day after the end of each calendar quarter (April, July, October, January)
  • Quarterly filings: use ST-50
  • If you collected over $30,000 is sales tax last year, monthly filings are due
  • If you received a penalty, you have the option of filing for forbearance

Additional Topics of Conversation:

  • SuperBill: How can we provide effective information for our clients to receive reimbursement from FSA/HSA/Insurance? Specific details and codes were offered that have proved successful
  • Interest in the CA 2-tier system where you could receive a certification vs a license depending on education received. Possible adoption for NJ?
  • Interest in having Pete Whitridge as a guest educator for a NJ seminar: https://www.amtamassage.org/famt/PeteWhitridge

  • MTF fundraiser has been postponed until the Fall

May 2019 Highlights

  • Future Week-day Jersey City meet ups are targeted to be in the downtown JC area around Grove Street, focusing on business development.
  • Anticipating beginning quarterly Virtual Meet Ups in July. More info to come.

Topics: Continuing Education, Self-Care with the Changing Season, & Networking.

  • Interest in having Continuing Education hosted in a location more easily accessible by public transportation.
  • Conference timing preferred to be during the week: tends to be cheaper for the venue, and easier in our line of work since most of us work weekends.
  • Possible workshop on how to present: This can encompass selling yourself, teaching, etc.
    • Know your audience
    • Address different learning styles
    • Recap what you’ve discussed/learning objectives before dismissing
  • Self Care: Many do not yet have a solid self care routine in place due to time or finances
    • Ways to incorporate self care into your routine: make it convenient (timing/proximity)
    • Incorporate group accountability
  • For the Hoboken Wellness Crawl: Service samplings worked well to get clients to return and pay for services
  • Future initiative to potentially have the Local Meet Ups reach out to schools in their area to advocate on behalf of AMTA?
  • Virtual Meeting proposal was mildly accepted. In-person meetings preferred by those in attendance.
Reminders:
  • MTF fundraiser has been postponed until the Fall

  • Future Week-day Jersey City meet ups are targeted to be in the downtown JC area around Grove Street, focusing on business development. Currently seeking a location for July.

  • You don’t have to recreate the wheel, research existing resources to help you along the way, or to jump off from

March 2019 Highlights

  • Discussed possibilities of having guest speakers and involving other disciplines for networking and information sharing.
  • Future Week-day Jersey City meet ups are targeted to be in the downtown JC area around Grove Street, focusing on business development. Currently seeking a location for May.

Topic: Self Care – Everyday we are advocating mobility, stability and recovery for our clients but how much are we actually doing for ourselves?

  • Business goals as an LMT: What type of marketing you currently do, what kind do you want to do. Getting in the right mindset of growing your personal business or even growing your practice and client retention within a staffed position. Each of us discussed where we currently are with massage and what our general goals are. We discussed what we think we need to get there.
  • Rebecca Cuje was a guest providing advice and insight on marketing/business strategies.
  • Common issues with finding time for self care and prioritizing your work: For staff employees it seems slightly easier to factor in massage trades with co-workers and have scheduled days off. For independent LMTs it seems harder to find time for self care. We discussed the need for balance and organization.
